Rey…Solo?

“A  Solo? No…”

That’s what you’re thinking, isn’t it? Well, you may say no, but I say yes. At the very least, I say maybe. What follows is our theory detailing how Rey, from The Force Awakens, may very well be a member of the Solo family.

The Force Is With Her

Yes, Rey is a strong user of the force. No, Han Solo isn’t. However, just as Luke and Leia were siblings, both with access to the force, so too could Rey and Ben (or Kylo Ren) Solo. Episode VII copies the original trilogy in many ways. The idea that there will be another force sensitive brother/sister team isn’t that far fetched. So, Rey could have access to the force because she’s related to the Skywalker clan, just by way of Leia, rather than Luke.

Her Time On Jakku

When we meet Rey, she is on the planet Jakku. The film plays out as if she’s been abandoned there. What if she was left there for her own good? If she is Han and Leia’s daughter, and has use of the force, maybe Luke trained her, in her youth. Luke trained Ben Solo before he became Kylo Ren. They may have trained together. Once Luke felt Ben turning to the dark side, it may have been his idea to send Rey to the far reaches of the universe. Luke himself grew up in a similar place, for his own safety. He would understand how that can work in her best interest. It’s a hard decision, but a better option than the alternative. Luke can’t let Ben and Rey end up under the thumb of Snoke. Also, when Rey meets BB-8 he says his reason for being there is classified. Rey responds, “me, too.”

Leaving Jakku

When Rey and Finn meet up, they are immediately on the run from The First Order. In their haste to find a ship to escape in, Rey reveals that she can fly and she refers to the Millennium Falcon as garbage. Maybe Rey’s affinity for flying comes from her father being a fantastic pilot. After all, Han Solo piloted the Falcon to make the Kesssel Run in less than 12 parsecs. As for calling the Millennium Falcon “garbage”, she may have meant that compared to the other ships they could choose from, it was garbage. This would mean that she knew a thing or two about the Falcon. How it handles, how fast it is, etc. The only way that she gets that information is from her youth, not from anything that happens after she’s left on Jakku. She was too afraid to leave to find out about how one ship compares to another. Once in the pilot seat, Rey commands the ship like it’s nothing new to her. Not only does she have masterful control of the Falcon, but she knows the ins and outs of it’s inner workings well enough to make critical repairs on the fly.

Family Ties To Han

There are several moments in The Force Awakens that lend themselves to showing a family connection. For example, it seems like more than coincidence that Han’s ship just happens to be on the same planet as his daughter. It’s clear that, if Rey is a Solo, the ship was left there for her. Han and Chewbacca just happen to find the Falcon, even though it could be anywhere in the universe. Han was keeping tabs on her. Maybe Han paid Unkar Plutt to keep him in the loop. In the scene where the group goes to see Maz Kanata, Rey remarks that she didn’t think that much green existed in the universe. Han’s expression, upon hearing this, is one of remorse, perhaps for sending his little girl away. Also, Han offers her work with him and Chewie on the Falcon. If there is some ulterior motive to leaving her on Jakku, giving Rey a job is a good way to get her to stick around and be able to watch over her, too. Lastly, after Han’s demise, when Rey returns to Leia, they share a moment that should’ve been given to Chewbacca. The only way it’s acceptable for Rey to console Leia, rather than Chewie doing it, is if Rey is family.

Family Ties To Kylo Ren

Just as there are moments that tie Rey to Han Solo, so too are there ones that connect her to Kylo Ren. After Rey and Finn escape from Jakku, the news is given to Kylo Ren. When he hears that there was a girl, he pulls the officer that delivers the news into a choke hold and demands, “what girl?” Clearly Kylo knows something we don’t know. Later, when Kylo interrogates Rey, he feels that she regards Han Solo as a father figure. Kylo assures her she would be disappointed. This is yet another breadcrumb to lead us to the Solo family. The final point on this is that despite Kylo Ren not getting what he wants from her, he doesn’t kill her. Even before discovering her force abilities, Kylo doesn’t just destroy her.

Last Words

That’s all for this theory. All this certainly explains why Rey could be a Solo, right down to her force powers. To find out why stormtrooper turned hero, Finn, could be a Jedi, click here. Please let us know what’s right or wrong with this theory by leaving your take in the comments.
