Could Finn Be A Jedi?

Finn: Jedi or Trooper?

I get the distinct idea that most people will give the knee jerk reaction that Finn can’t be a Jedi. He was a First Order Stormtrooper. Stick with me for today’s theory that Finn is actually a Jedi. At the opening of The Force Awakens, we see Finn contend with an internal crisis of conscience by renouncing his allegiance to The First Order. One may say that this is just an example of a guy who can’t go on as a soldier any longer. For this theory, it’s because of his innate goodness. It’s because of the light inside him.

The Force Awakens

Long before Rey does anything remotely Jedi-ish, the words about there being an awakening come out in the movie. The big event preceding this is Finn leaving The First Order. Perhaps this means that the movie title The Force Awakens refers to the force awakening in Finn.

Finn Receives Luke’s Lightsaber

When the group gets to Maz Kanata’s place, Rey feels the pull of Luke’s lightsaber. She goes to it and has a vivid force vision. Despite all this, when she leaves, she doesn’t take the weapon with her. Shortly after, The First Order arrives and who does Maz Kanata see fit to give Luke’s saber to? If you said Finn, you’re correct. Did she do this because she thought he would run along to deliver it to Rey? Probably not. Finn had just made a speech about how they all needed to run away from The First Order. None the less, Maz Kanata is portrayed as an excellent judge of character, and when it’s time to pass the lightsaber on, she chooses Finn to be the recipient.

Finn Can Handle A Lightsaber

Although he doesn’t wield it like a pro, Finn can use a lightsaber. He fights the trooper now affectionately referred to as TR-8R. This is the trooper that calls Finn out as a, you guessed it, traitor. The two engage in a battle where Finn’s weapon of choice is the lightsaber, and TR-8R uses a weapon akin to a club crossed with a cattle prod. Moving along, Finn later ends up fighting Kylo Ren. When Kylo addresses Finn, he does so by screaming the word traitor at him also. Even though it can be for abandoning The First Order, to me, it felt much more personal than that. It felt like Kylo was upset with a brother, not a soldier. Then they fight. Although Kylo Ren is properly trained, Finn does a surprisingly good job of holding his own. Maybe he is force sensitive, but doesn’t realize it, much the way Anakin didn’t know that that’s how he was able to podrace.

Has Finn Been Trained As A Jedi?

If Finn showed access to the force, in his youth, he would’ve been trained to become a Jedi. If he has been trained, it would explain why Kylo Ren didn’t just destroy him in their fight. It would also mean that Finn was likely trained by Luke Skywalker. It seems that he’s the only person doing any training, at this point. So, if they trained together, and they wound up at odds with each other, it would give Kylo cause to call Finn a traitor. Additionally, if Finn did get some Jedi training, it is conceivable that his First Order conditioning could be responsible for repressing the memory of it away in his mind.

The Last Jedi

The newest information about Episode VIII is that it will be called The Last Jedi. If Finn is a student of Luke, this could make him the last Jedi. What about Rey, you ask? the answer to that question can be found here. Check back soon for more Reel Theories, or better yet get on the e-mail list for updates as new theories arrive.
