Rey…Kenobi?

Is Rey A Kenobi?

That kinda says it all, I suppose. This theory is all about the parentage of Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Thanks to the “Mystery Box” story telling style of J.J. Abrams, we all came out of that movie with a million questions. Right up at the top of the list is the question of Reys background. Who is she related to? How did she come to be on Jakku? How is she such a good pilot? On and on, the questions seem to never end.

Dress For Success

The first thing I noticed about Rey was the similarities between her clothing and young Obi-Wan Kenobi’s. The color palate is the same. The design, with the fabric crossed over the front, is markedly similar. Consider, also, that as Obi-Wan ages and starts using the name Ben, he wears a dark brown robe, but the outfit worn beneath it is still that sand colored fabric, crossed over in the front.

From Tatooine To Jakku

When we meet Rey, she is living on the planet Jakku. When we meet Ben Kenobi, he is living on the planet Tatooine. Both planets are desert planets. Both sit outside the direct sight of the Empire/First Order. If Rey is related to Ben, it stands to reason that his influence is what landed her on Jakku. It is his idea of a place to lie low. After all, Ben goes into seclusion, as far as we know, to watch over Luke. But, Luke was left with family. Why would Ben need to stay there? Maybe it’s to atone for not being there for his own family. Maybe watching over Luke is his second chance. True, he could go to Rey, but his allegiance has always been to the Jedi order first. He knows that keeping Luke away from the Empire is of the utmost importance.

Rey Walks in Ben’s Footsteps

In The Force Awakens, there is a scene where Rey has to covertly navigate her way around to escape from the First Order. She manages to do this by climbing and walking around with stealth in every step. The whole thing echoes the same methods and techniques used by her father, I’m sorry, Ben, when he is creeping around to disable the tractor beam in Episode IV. Since Ep.VII is a copy of Ep.IV, it seems that the two scenes are to illustrate their relationship.

Rey Is Very Powerful

During the beginning of Ep VII, we see Kylo Ren freeze a bolt from a blaster in mid air, then proceed to casually walk around for some, “I’m the bad guy, let me monologue now” action. He’s clearly been trained and is quite, quite strong in the ways of the force. Later on in the story, Rey discovers that she is force sensitive, and, before you know it, she’s in a lightsaber battle with Kylo Ren. In short, an untrained person fights a highly trained one, yet she, against all odds, manages to beat him. This is only possible if she hails from a bloodline that is highly force sensitive. A bloodline like that of the Kenobis.

On a side note… During this fight, Rey has a moment of clarity where she composes herself with what seems like a little bit of meditation. We’ve seen that before. When Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Darth Maul are fighting, Obi-Wan composes himself with meditation.

Of Course She Can Fly

This one is pretty easy to explain away. In Ep. I, we find out that Anakin can podrace because his access to the force is guiding his actions. The same could be the case here. Rey’s access to the force, by way of her Kenobi genes, allows her to fly like a pro, and say, pilot the Millennium Falcon through the shell of a crashed Star Destroyer.

Droids

In Ep. IV, R2-D2, with the secret plans inside, is sent to Obi-Wan. In Ep. VII, BB-8, with the secret plans inside, ends up under the protection of Rey. This is yet another parallel to their characters.

Her Voice

You know, generally speaking, the bad guys in movies have English accents. Daisy Ridley, the actress who plays the part of Rey, naturally has an English accent. John Boyega, who plays Finn, is English also. Yet, a conscious decision was made for him to change his voice, but leave her accent alone. This could be because Obi-Wan Kenobi spoke with the same accent. Both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor are from the United Kingdom, just like Ridley and Boyega. Plus, in Rey’s vision, when she finds Luke’s lightsaber, she hears Obi-Wan’s voice say her name, too. Now, if that bit about the villain sounding English piqued your curiosity, we have a theory for that too.
