Logan Should Be A Senile Old Man
The Logan Trailer Is Out
Yup. I saw the trailer for the newest installment in the X-Men franchise, Logan. It looks like it will be a good film; certainly no worse than that origin film that wrecked Deadpool. Like everything else, these days, the trailer for Logan left us with more questions than answers. Who is this little girl? Why are both Professor X and Logan old? What’s this story even supposed to be about? Like I said, questions.
The Girl
I don’t know who she is, but I do know one thing. If they expect me to have read the books to know who she is, it’s a crap story. I don’t have a problem with knowing the source material. I’m just concerned that things are going to take a turn to where instead of the films paying respect to the comics, they begin to be companions to them. Much the same way a deleted scene used to be a little something extra, now it’s gotten to where you have to watch these moments for the full context of a movie to be clear. I’m looking at you, Batman v. Superman. Anyways…we’re now way off course. This girl is looking to be a child of Logan, maybe? There is a long standing tradition of experimentation revealing powers in people. Let’s run down the list. Wolverine – mutation plus experiment. Hulk – experiment. Deadpool – experiment. Abomination – experiment. Captain America – experiment. We can keep going. Winter Soldier – experiment. Red Skull – experiment. Point being, this girl could be the result of, yet another, experiment to create some kind of desired mutation, or combination of powers.
Two Old Men
The first X-Men movie had a great moment where they explained that Wolverine ages slower than the rest of us. They even suggested that Logan could be older than the Professor due to his mutant healing factor. Now, I know they kinda’ screwed up the idea of a coherent, continuous story with all the time traveling and such. Deadpool was kind enough to highlight this for us, in his solo film, by mentioning that the timeline was so confusing. However, one thing that won’t change from any amount of time traveling, is how Logan ages. If his healing is enough to slow his aging for the first half of his life, then it ought to do the same to his later years as well.
The Story
To follow up the lingering questions about the ages of Logan and Xavier, comes speculation about the story. I like the idea that by the end of the film, we come to find out that Professor X is a figment of Logan’s imagination. Maybe he has aged slower than everyone else. Maybe this story is set 100 years from now. There seems to be a lot in the trailer to suggest no particular point in time. The woods will always be woody, and the scenes in the city are vague enough to not hint to a specific time. The cars we see don’t matter. Any car we see in the trailer could be just a restored classic. In any event, Logan can be old by his own standards. Professor Xavier could be long dead and gone. His involvement in the story can come from either a hallucination on behalf of Logan, or Professor X could have maybe put a bit of himself into Logan’s mind. I just think I’ll be a little let down if the answer to this is just that Logan’s healing is on the fritz so now he’s aged like Xavier. If this story is set in the future, this girl could be anyone. She could be a relative, another experiment, or even another time traveler. Oh, I’ve got it. Time traveling, relative, that’s the victim of experiments. Yeah, no. That’s too much.
Last Words
No matter what the story turns out to be, the new entry in the X-men series, Logan, looks to be an adventure. Hugh Jackman is supposed to be done with the character after this, so the powers that be are sure to “bring it” in terms of action and story. After all, this will mark the end of an era for a character that never fails to please. What are you expecting for this new movie? Leave your take in the comments below.
