The Jedi & The Rebels Are The Villains Of Star Wars

Say, Whaaaat?

Yeah, I got ya’. It’s been 40 years and 8, soon to be 9, movies telling us that they are the heroes. What gives? Am I right? Just give me a chance to make my case. That’s all I ask.

The Law and the Lawless

The best argument to prove that the Galactic Empire is in the right is to simply point out that the are the existing government. Leading up to it, they had a senate and elections and protocols just like any other government. Even at the point that Palpatine seized power, he went through the proper channels to get there. Now that we have that established, it becomes clear that the clone troopers, and ultimately the stormtroopers, are the equivalent of the military. Following this line of thought…no, scratch that. Historically, in the really real world, the rebel forces are always the bad guys rising up against the established government. They could try to go through the proper steps to overthrow the Empire, but instead the Rebels choose to operate outside the law. The Jedi are just as guilty of this behavior, too. For example, when Mace Windu has the opportunity to capture and prosecute Emperor Palpatine, he opts to kill him, citing that Palpatine is too dangerous to let live. These are the actions of criminals, not heroes. Also, let’s not forget that once upon a time, Dooku studied under Master Yoda. At some point, he realized that he had chosen the wrong side of the law and he switched sides.

Embrace Your Anger

Anger and hate are supposed to be tools of evil, so it’s funny that the only times the Jedi seem to be able to beat the Sith is when they fight from a position motivated by anger, rage, or even revenge. In my youth, the big struggle was between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. In the grand finale showdown between them, Luke fails to best Vader. That is, he fails until Vader mentions Luke’s sister, Leia. At the suggestion that Vader will find her, Luke goes into a rage and is finally able to defeat Darth Vader in battle. Now, let’s fast forward some years to the prequel trilogy. In the main lightsaber fight between Darth Maul and the team of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, the same story unfolds. Although the Jedi duo outnumber the Sith fighter, they struggle to keep him at bay. Only when Maul kills Jinn does Kenobi find the ability to beat him. Only when he is fueled by revenge.

Run & Hide

Yet another example that supports the idea that the Rebels and Jedi of Star Wars are the bad guys is that upon defeat, the so called heroes retreat and go into hiding. It’s been my experience that the police don’t investigate and pursue the victims of crimes, just the perpetrators. Why, then, does Yoda flee to the far reaches of the galaxy to evade the Empire? That’s not what the hero does. Likewise, Obi-Wan Kenobi also goes to a distant corner of the universe to hide. Not only that, but he even changes his name from Obi-Wan to Ben. As a rule of thumb, the hero doesn’t need to use an alias. The reason they take wing to distant reaches from the Empire is that, like so many other criminals, they are on the lam from the law.

 Don’t Lose Your Head

Please forgive me if all this tarnishes your image of the Jedi and their buddies the Rebels. I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’. There really is quite an argument to support the idea is all. Even at the basic level, Darth Vader just wanted to reconnect with his family, but no. That wasn’t good enough for Luke’s whinny butt. “I wanted to go to Toshi Station!” Wah. He’s such a cry baby when we meet him. I know, character arc. That just doesn’t serve the needs of this theory, that’s all. Just don’t lose your head yelling at me through your screen. As always, I certainly hope you enjoyed reading this. No matter where your opinion falls on the topic, leave your take in the comments below.

I thought I could let it go but, c’mon, I titled the section “Don’t Lose Your Head.” The final nail in this coffin is that Mace Windu decapitates Jango Fett in front of his son, Boba. Now, “this party’s over.”
