The Reel – Logan

The Good

Logan was awesome! This movie has a great story, new characters, and a ton of action. Really, after the massive success of Deadpool, there was some genuine concern at the Reel Theories headquarters that the future was chock full of comic book movies that would be rated R, regardless of if they warranted such a rating. Logan does, in fact, carry an R rating, but with good cause. The emotional story gives way to a litany of cursing in the dialog, and the action is intense, to say the least. In fact, the action is jam packed with an exhaustive amount of violence, the likes of which seems very appropriate for the Logan character. We’re talking full on decapitations, and many, many severed limbs. All in all, a great use of an R rating.

The Bad

On the other hand, it’s a long movie. I mean 2 hours and 17 minutes long. With this kind of length, the film makers couldn’t just do wall to wall action sequences. That would just about lobotomize the audience. No, they did the right thing and crafted an emotional story around characters we know and care for. However, this story was so slow to develop that it really made an already long movie feel longer. Furthermore, the story was so sad and depressing that in many ways it served to exaggerate the length of a movie that already felt too long, in the first place. On top of this, the story played out in a way that was quite predictable. The senile Professor Xavier who was riddled with guilt was bound to die. Maybe that moment could have been a bit bigger. Also, the adamantium poisoned Logan was clearly going to meet his end and  put his suffering and chronic coughing to rest. Even the adamantium bullet they made such a big deal about had a clear purpose. As soon as X24 came into the story, that bullet had his name on it. How else could they eliminate him?

The Big Picture

Logan was awesome! I know…It’s how this whole thing started. That doesn’t make it any less true, though. It’s a solid film that gives the characters a proper send off. This movie isn’t just good for the characters. It’s good for the fans. Although the list of faults with it is a bit long, the movie just works. It doesn’t work because of how it’s made. It works despite how it’s made.
